entropion in dogs

Hi everyone, my name is Thomas and I have some information for all of my 4 legged friends.  The other day when I was going for my morning walk, I was stopped by one of my many 4 legged friends who I always stop to talk to.  We were greeting each other and I noticed that Ben was acting kind of different.  I noticed that something was wrong with his eye.  His eye was tearing and he kept rubbing his eye.  It sure looked like it was bothering him a lot.  Ben told me that he went to his vet and the vet told him that he had Entropion.  It sure was a big word, but it is not a good thing to have.  Entropion in dogs is an inward rolling of the eyelid edges.  It is a condition in which the lower eyelid edges of or both eyes roll inward.  I think this causes the eyelashes to rub against the eyeball, leading to really bad chronic irritation and damage to the cornea.  That is not good.  His doctor told him it is considered to be inherited and usually develops within a few months of being born.  Boy that is scary.

Ben’s doctor told his human parents what to watch for and here is the list Ben told me:

  •    Tearing

  •    Squinting, inability to see the eye well

  •    Rubbing eyes

  •    Mucoid or thick discharge from the eyes

  •    Rolling of the eyelid and wetness on the hair adjacent to the eyelids

I don’t want this to happen to any of my friends, so if you have a problem with your eyes, please have you human parents take you to a vet and ask questions and have an exam.  You need your eyes so see the rabbits when you go for walks.  I hope this helps you.

Love Thomas
